Convention Research Blog: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Camera Angles and Movements: In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom there are various shots used. Some of which are extreme long shots, close up shots, and high angle shots. The extreme long shot was used to show the effects of the volcanic lava on the dinosaur’s and people in the film. Close up shots were used to show the intense emotion on one of the actors/actresses faces when a problem arose. High angle shots were used to show a different perspective on what was happening at a specific moment in the film.
Mis-En-Scene: The costumes consist of a variety of clothing items, some of them are that of hunters/poachers, others are normal short sleeve shirts, shorts, pants, and long sleeve shirts. The lighting in the film is usually from sunlight, if it isn’t it is from another source such as light bulbs. Makeup is scarcely used in this movie, aside from artificial wounds such as scratches, cuts, or bruises. The acting was to convey a sense of urgency, because the characters are concerned for both their own and the dinosaurs’ survival.
Sound: Diegetic sound is used throughout the film, it is used when dinosaurs, technology, and other elements in the film make sound. Dialogue is also used throughout the film. There are barely any non-diegetic sounds in this film, however; one non-diegetic sound is from soundtracks during the film to create a sense of suspense.
Editing: Editing is found mostly in the form of CGI. Most dinosaurs are completely CGI and are the movie’s main theme. Greenscreens are used to create backdrops unreasonable to make a set of, such as the volcano.
Elements: Shots used most often were long shots, low angle shots, and wide shots, to give scope of a situation or show characters interacting with a dinosaur. Darker lighting was used to create a sense of danger and light was used to show events transpiring. The acting portrayed the characters and their responses to dinosaurs, for example the fight or flight response. Character’s motivations for being involved with the dinosaurs in the first place were also revealed. The settings were mainly the island and the mansion. The most conventional sounds were diegetic sounds from dinosaurs and the most common editing was CGI.
Liked Elements: My team likes the use of CGI in this film, it is good quality and looks very real. The editing of the movie was also very clean and well cut. The movie also has a lot of attention to detail, this is shown in many scenes throughout the film.
Unappealing Elements: The CGI is impossible for our group to replicate because we have neither the budget or skills to do so. The completely artificial settings, dinosaurs, and environmental elements simply cannot be recreated by us.
