Genre Research: Sci-Fi
Camera Angles and Movements:
Close ups/Extreme Close Ups on technological elements. This is done to highlight the dependence on technology in the time period the film takes place in.
Establishing shots on large or small sections of the cityscape, again done to showcase the widespread use of technology.
Low Angle shots, most often used to empower certain characters in positions of authority.
Mis-En-Scene:
Costumes often exhibit urban and technological influences, and could potentially feature high-tech modifications to an actor's body.
The lighting is generally reduced to convey a general sense of disrepair or gloominess, or just a general impression of dark situations.
Makeup is used in conjunction with costuming to create technological modifications, or to show scars and grime on a character to convey an impression of hard living.
Props and setting are both highly technological or scientific, often a combination of the two, and the setting may have influences to show a state of disrepair.
Sound:
Sound motifs are often utilized. Such motifs are generally created with a synthesizer or some other similarly technological means, to fully enforce the futurism of the film.
Diegetic sound often features sounds generated as a byproduct of functioning machines- diagnostic beeps, alarms, computer fans whirring, or other various sounds of the world.
Narrations and voiceovers may also be used to provide context to the world, especially in opening sequences.
Editing:
Abrupt and frequent cutaways are often used to show or enforce a sense of frantic activity by jumping between several narratives.
Split-screening and crosscutting may also be used to show multiple actions being performed at once, generally in purpose of creating the same sense of chaos.
Example Films:
Godzilla: King of The Monsters (2019)
The Meg (2018)
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Elements My Group Likes:
My group likes the use of highly technological, futuristic, or scientific props to show the reliance on technology in the film. The use of empowering low angles and dramatic close ups is also appealing, and both of these techniques will likely see use in our Final Product.
Elements My Group Does Not Like:
Mostly as an issue of attainability, my group is opposed to the use of establishing or aerial shots over high-tech cityscapes, since this is not something we can accomplish with the tools at our disposal. It would also be difficult to utilize a sound motif of any kind in the background.
